Refugee camps along the borderThe situation of refugees from Burma in camps in Thailand is one of the most protracted in the world. As almost three decades has gone by the camp education system has established basic and higher education. Since 2009 KRCEE has had the overall management and policy development responsibilities for the seven Karen refugee camps.

Camp Education The refugees brought with them their education system from Karen State in Eastern Burma and have demonstrated an extraordinary effort to give their children access to education. An extensive education system has been developed, including pre-school, primary, secondary, vocational and adult learning opportunities. More than 28,000 students are receiving basic education.
The restrictions on foreigners access into the camps have contributed to a high degree of community ownership. KRCEE's staff of 70 are all from the refugee communities and the education system rely heavily on teachers and educational administrators recruited in the camps. |
